Outlandish and Ciele Athletics Team Up For Custom CLBCap

Brooklyn-based hiking store Outlandish is entering the collaborative apparel space for the first time by teaming up with Ciele Athletics for a custom iteration of the CLBCap. Only the fourth Black-owned outdoor goods purveyor in the US, Outlandish aims to help its community reconnect with nature via bi-weekly hikes and a selection of brands both global and local — Salomon, Arc’Teryx, The North Face, Allmansright, William Ellery, and, of course, Ciele Athletics, to name a few — and its cap is inspired by quilter Harriet Powers, whose work hangs on its walls.

Powers’ quilts tell the story of Black people’s relationship with nature through richly-detailed iconography, including depictions of a hog named Betts, who, as legend has it, ran 500 miles from Georgia to Virginia to obtain her freedom, and who’s become Outlandish’s icon. Powers’ Pictorial Quilt is presented in black-and-white on the bottom of the collaborative CLBCap’s brim, while Outlandish and Ciele logos appear on the right and left temples, respectively. The black-and-orange color scheme nods to the soil and clay of Georgia, Powers’ home state, and the cap is made of COOLWick fabric that also features reflective embellishments and UPF protection.

Expect the Outlandish x Ciele Athletics CLBCap to release at Outlandish on August 3, with info on an online drop yet to be revealed and a limited run of 61 units (Powers’ age when she completed the Pictorial Quilt). The launch will be accompanied by a 4-mile trail run in Prospect Park and a party immediately afterwards, both of which can be RSVP’d to at Outlandish’s website.
